What is CC in automobiles and what is its relation to mileage?

CC is a commonly used term in the automobile industry. It is short for Cubic Capacity and refers to the size of the engine cylinder.

The size of an engine’s cylinder is directly proportional to the vehicle’s fuel consumption. Thus, a large CC signifies a large cylinder, which would require more fuel to complete each stroke.

Fuel economy or mileage refers to the distance an engine can go for, on a certain amount of fuel.

Since higher cc requires more fuel, it is not very good for fuel economy. This means that generally, smaller engines with lower cc have better mileage than vehicles with high cc, requiring higher amounts of fuel.

Why is cc important?

CC refers to the Cubic Capacity of an engine cylinder. Generally, the engine’s size determines how powerful the vehicle is.

This means that the larger the engine cylinder, and the higher the cc, the more powerful the bike or car is. On the flip side, large engines also take up more fuel, thus costing more for the owners.

While buying a vehicle, the owners must take into account the purpose of their usage and the requirements they want to prioritise. If one wants a high powered, high torque vehicle, then a higher cc would work for them, but if one wants to keep costs to a minimum, they would opt for a lower cc engine.

Thus, the cc of an engine is important in determining the power output as well as the fuel economy of the vehicle.

What is the best cc for mileage in motorcycles?

Motorcycles in India generally range from 50cc to 1500 cc, which is quite a large range.

This can give rise to a lot of confusion in the minds of buyers, since there is so much to choose from. As mentioned before, the smaller the engine and cc of a bike, the lesser amount of fuel it requires, which means the better mileage it gives.

Hence, bikes ranging upto 100 cc have the best mileage. Furthermore, those that range from 100cc to 200cc are also quite good for fuel economy. However, bikes above 500 cc have the least fuel economy and thus give the least mileage.

What is the best cc for mileage in cars?

When compared to motorcycles, cars have higher cc figures.

This is because cars have bigger engines and also more cylinders in the engine than bikes. Normally, a car’s cc can range between 800 cc to 6000 cc.

As mentioned earlier, the lower the cc of the car, the better the mileage obtained. Hence, cars with up to 1000 cc give the best mileage, while cars with the cc ranging from 1000 to 1800 are also quite economical. However, above 1800 cc, car mileage reduces due to higher powered engines.

How is cc calculated?

CC stands for the cubic capacity of the engine. Essentially, engine capacity refers to the engine displacement. The engine capacity is the addition of each cylinder’s volume in the engine.

Therefore, the cc is always expressed in relation to the volume of the cylinder. For instance a 1500 cc engine actually means that the engine capacity is 1.5 litres.

When manufacturer’s calculate the cc of the vehicle’s engine, they take into account the area of each cylinder, the number of cylinders in the vehicle as well as the stroke of the crankshaft.

This figure is expressed in cubic inches, which is then displayed as cc for ease of understanding.

Does cc affect speed?

A large engine is higher powered. This is because a larger engine can burn more fuel as compared to a smaller engine, therefore generating more power and torque.

This naturally has an effect on the performance of the vehicle. Higher cc or larger engines do not necessarily always mean higher speeds. This is because speed also depends on the design of the engine and how the vehicle itself is made.

However, higher cc means that the engine is able to accelerate faster and carry heavy loads at high speeds. Hence, directly or indirectly, cc can definitely have an effect on the speed of a vehicle.
